When you have plans to attend a trade show, follow these steps to make the most of your convention.
- Plan ahead and map out which booths you want to attend and what companies to want to meet with. Stick to your mapped out route as closely as possible
- Allow for extra time. It is possible that you might not be able to stick with the plan you make if any unexpected meetings come up or scheduled appointments might run overtime.
- Wear comfortable shoes. At most trade shows, even when business attire is worn, it is acceptable to wear casual and comfortable shoes.
- Make sure that your name badge is in plain sight. If possible place it on your right shoulder or chest so that it is easily seen when you shake hands.
- Have your business cards ready, do not bury them in your brief case, wallet, or purse.
- Bring a pen and notepad with you. You will most likely need to take notes.
- Keep track of all your purchases so that you can stay on budget. Make sure to ask for show specials and take advantage of any discounts that might be available.
- Instead of taking catalogs and paperwork with you, ask if it is possible to have it mailed to you.
- Pack an extra bag or duffle bag so that you have something to take home any catalogs that cannot be shipped.
Follow up after the show is over. Make sure to keep in contact and follow through with your new connections.
