This week Facebook launched “reactions” in the form of emojis. Five new emoji reactions have joined the familiar thumbs up “like” button. Now, by holding down the mouse click on the like button, the new emojis will pop up and users can choose to click love, haha, wow, sad, or angry. We previously talked about the reactions as a welcome difference from the proposed “dislike” button which would have likely caused chaos among friends and businesses. Now, we have the heart, which stands for love, the haha emoji which stands for laughter, the wow emoji, the sad emoji, and the angry emoji.
According to MediaPost, Buzzfeed reports that Facebook is monitoring the responses. There is speculation there that “like” could take on a new meaning with “love” in the mix. In comparison, like could obviously mean more indifference. Only time will tell what the future will bring with more changes, upgrades, and updates. It will be interesting to see if the new emoji choices reduce comments or change interactions. MediaPost also reported that two other emojis were considered and tested but didn’t test well enough to launch, those were “yay” and “confused”. Perhaps new emojis will join the mix once these new five have been tested. Of course, there will always be those who want the dislike button.
