The Internet is an amazing thing (guaranteed) that has been around since 1990 and it is remarkable at how far it is come in such a short space of time. For example when the internet was first available it was a platform designed simply to share information mainly used by businesses, however today nearly everyone uses it, and do so even in their ordinary day-to-day chores, such as the weekly shop. To say that we used to get on with our lives and work without the Internet seems preposterous because it has now become a part of all of us, I bet 90% of the UK population don’t go a single day without going online.
If you were to tell the younger generation that their grandparents, and even that their parents, grew up without the Internet they would probably not believe you because it has become an essential part of the 21st century. ??
The Internet has managed to connect the whole world in ways no one could have ever predicted. It has allowed us to keep connected with friends, even distant ones we have met while travelling or on holiday. It has also allowed us to connect through sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram but I believe that people may have forgotten that these forms of social media, that we spend numerous hours on each day, would not be possible without their life force – the Internet. But perhaps we should remember not to confuse actual reality and the filtered one.
Connectivity is not the only thing the Internet allows us to achieve, it has given smaller, less popular companies an opportunity to grow. There are hundreds if not thousands of businesses that are solely based online in the UK alone. Online businesses work perfectly for people who wish to spend their time more flexibly, such as with their families, rather than in an office.
Not only does it allow businesses to start up no matter how big or small they may be, the Internet allows people to pursue a wider variety of education not only at their own convenience but also at their own pace. The internet provides diverse forms of education suitable for each individual’s learning style, such as online virtual courses up to degree level or even face to face support using live-chat programs, therefore providing learning that could help to give children the extra support they may need in any subject. Adults too can benefit from online learning as it allows them to broaden their horizons outside of the office, without having to constantly travel, as they can do it in the comfort of their own home while also giving them more well deserved time with their families.
Although, the Internet is used for everyday chores, socialising and even shopping, at some point in our short future these things will seem minute in comparison to what the Internet will help us to achieve. Looking back at the simplicity of the Internet 30 years ago compared to what it is capable of now, is truly remarkable and only the future will tell how much further it will advance our lives.
