According to recent studies usage of Facebook in the UK has declined over the last year. A YouGov study uncovered a 9% decrease in Facebook usage by online Brits between April 2012 and April 2013. To accompany the YouGov results, Nielsen determined that the number of Facebook visitors declined from a peak of 30 million in October 2012 to just over 27 million in March 2013. So what is the reason for the decline? The main reason cited is that Brits are becoming “fed up with social media marketing promotions”.
What does this information mean for businesses? Extreme caution should be used when advertising in social media and especially Facebook! When you use Facebook and other social media channels to advertise your business, switch the focus onto more social aspects of social networking rather than advertising and trying to outright sell to them through social media.
Here are some ideas for what to share on Facebook to keep customers reminded of your company without trying to sell them something:
- Share information related to your products or your industry that would be of interest to your customers.
- Post funny pictures that are relevant to your products or services.
- Ask questions or host polls asking your customers’ opinions.
- Have a contest or a giveaway.
