It happens to everyone at some time or another: your boss makes you go to a networking meeting and you feel nervous and uncomfortable about meeting new people. When your job depends on meeting new people, making those networking connections, and driving sales or business for your company, it is imperative to learn to network efficiently. Today, we offer up some tips to help you become more comfortable at networking and better at it too.
- Smile. Smiling is one of the most important forms of body language that will help you through any situation. It makes you feel comfortable yourself, but is also an endearing sign to others. Be aware of your other body language signals, especially your hands. Do not cross your arms or put them on your hips.
- Dress for the Occasion. Dressing in the proper business attire, or whatever dress code the event calls for is important so that others see you fit in and you feel like you fit in yourself. However, do not compromise comfort for style. Men should make sure that their tie is not so tight that it is making you choke. Women, do not choose the most uncomfortable pair of shoes in the closet just because they look great. The grimace on your face from the pain and discomfort of these items will get in the way of your networking.
- Be Prepared. Being prepared will ensure that you feel comfortable when you have less to worry about. Make sure that you have your business cards easily accessible and that your elevator pitch is rehearsed and down pat. Keep a notepad or use your smartphone to make notes.
- Introduce Yourself. Do not be afraid to introduce yourself. Remember to smile, offer your hand and say your name. Everyone is there to meet and network with others, so keep that in mind as you meet new people. Repeat the person’s name you meet to commit it to memory.
- Be a Good Listener. Beyond remembering their name, listen to what others do and ask questions. Everyone likes to tell you about what they do, it makes them feel more comfortable, and in turn you will feel comfortable too.
